On Thursday we had cricket coaching. We learnt to make a book shape with our hands to catch the ball. Some of us were able to throw the ball up and clap before we caught it again. We played a game where one team was batting and the other team was fielding. Three people would bat at a time and run until the fielders had all the balls back. We had lots of fun learning to play cricket. Some of us are even going to play during summer!
As part of Māori language week we began learning a greetings song. Here is the song for you to practice at home as well. With this week being maths week Miss Ward thought we would do something a little different. She introduced us to rich tasks and we talked about how there can be different answers and different ways to do things. We had fun teaching each other the different ways we worked the problem out. We are now learning to think of another way to work out a problem once we have solved it. On Thursday Johnny and Bella read a book called Shadow Puppets for reading. The book taught them how to make shadow puppets and after reading they made their own. On Friday we decided to make our own shadow puppets. Miss Ward read the story to the class. We learnt that when something blocks light it creates a shadow. We also talked about things like a sundial and a solar eclipse. To make our shadow puppets we took a black piece of paper and drew our puppet on it. We then cut it out and taped a straw on to it. We talked about how we had to cut things like eyes and mouth out because you wouldn't see it in the shadow if you just drew it. After making our puppets we created plays using them. We used the light from the data projector to make the shadows. Last week we had our class poetry competition. I was so impressed with the way everyone spoke with a clear and loud voice. It was certainly a hard job for the judges! Well done to Josie taking third place, Emily second and Isla first. With Isla away Josie and Emily represented us in the finals. They both did a fantastic job!!
Everyone should be very proud of their efforts!! I had planned to make an iMovie with our poems. However, unfortunately the sound quality was not very good. On Monday morning we had Greg O'Connell, a poet from Christchurch come to visit us. He showed us how to make reading our poems aloud interesting. In the afternoon he came in to our classroom and we created a poem together.
On Wednesday we created our own poems using the same style about cars and dinosaurs. Here is our poem we created with Greg: Busy Bots Hum, hum, hum, Go the Thinkingbots. Whirr, whirr, whirr, Go the Writingbots. Brrr, brrr, brrr, Go the Freezingbots. And gizt, gist, gizt, Go the Gizmobots. |
